Countdown to Christmas: Reindeer Towel

108 Days Until Christmas
If you are looking for easy ideas that your children can prepare to gift for teachers or grandparents, I might have an idea for you. What about a reindeer towel?
NEEDS: plain white hand-towel and brown, white, black and red fabric paint.
- Wash the towel and dry without fabric softener or according to the paint directions.
- Dip or brush the bottom of your child’s foot with brown paint. Place their foot in the middle of the towel with toes pointing to the top.
- Dip or brush the palm of your child’s hand with brown paint. Place the right hand to the top-right of the footprint and the left hand to the top-left of the footprint.
- When the brown dries, use your child’s thumbprint dipped in white paint for the white’s of each eye.
- Use their thumbprint in red paint for Rudolph’s nose at the base of the footprint.
- When the white has dried, use the print of their pinkie finger, dipped in black, for the pupil of each eye.
- Use the color of your choice to write or stencil “Merry Christmas 2010! Love, __________”

Countdown to Christmas: FREE Shipping on Personalized Books
140 Days Until Christmas
I love personalized gifts and my kids got the biggest kick out of the personalized books they received from my inlaws a few years ago. These books are very cherished possessions and I highly recommend them. The illustrations are incredible. The price might seem a bit high but I think it is worth it considering the love of reading that these books can help develop. Go take a peak and see what you think.
PLUS, you can score FREE shipping on all books with Coupon Code FSW715!
Just FYI: My children have My Very Own Name and My Very Own Fairy Tale. Priceless!
Christmas Countdown: Pack a Shoebox
141 Days Until Christmas
Shame, shame, shame on me. Last year, we bought each of our children a plastic shoebox and let them run wild through Target packing it with gadgets and toiletries for Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. We spent over $50 on three shoeboxes. Now, I am not regretful that we were able to bless three children with gifts which they otherwise might not have received. What I DO regret is that we could have helped so many more with that same amount of money.
Watch this video and you can see what I mean. (NOTE: The distortion only lasts a few seconds.)

A Debt~Free Christmas
149 Days until Christmas
This week, Money Saving Mom, which one of my favorite blogs, is having Christmas in July and had a really great post (HERE) about having a debt~free Christmas.
“Oh no!” you yelp. “I don’t want to think about Christmas yet!”
If you are serious about celebrating Christmas (or any winter holiday) without accumulating new debt, then you better snap out of it and get started. (Sorry to be so stern.)
Here are some tips we use to have a debt~free Christmas:
- Keep focus. Remember the reason why you celebrate. For us, we focus on the meaning of Christmas as the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ.
- Set a budget for Christmas. We include our Christmas cards, postage/shipping, gifts, special baking, decorations and anything related to December 25th in our Christmas budget. We also have budget per person for gift-giving.
- Use cash only. As I preach with everything else, cash only will keep you shopping smart and will help you avoid overspending.
- Start looking for deals now. If you have a specific gift list, now is a perfect time to start watching those prices and keeping a Christmas price book. If you are waiting for inspiration, do not forget to browse the clearance section each time you visit a store. This includes office supply stores! I was able to score Cross pen gift sets ($29.99 value) for $5 each one year.
- Don’t feel like you have to meet a price-per-person. If you get a deal on a gift, use the retail value as the cost to apply toward your budgeted amount per person. There is a person in my family who feels obligated to spend the same amount for each person and if this person finds a deal, they use the sale price and by more. Nope, nope. Remember that the true value of the gift is not the price you paid but the thoughts of love you had toward that person when you purchased it.
- Be willing to go back for a price~match. We actually had to go back three times to Toys R Us last year to get them to keep matching the price on a particular item we purchased because they lowered it each week. That time of year is busy with errands anyway so it was no difficult to swing back by there with the receipt. Just verify that a store will offer you a price adjustment, the amount of time included in that policy, and whether or not you need to bring the items or just the receipt to receive the difference.
What are your tips for having a debt~free Christmas? I would love to hear them because we all need help saving money during the most expensive time of year.
